Description
Two Original WW1 German Death and Remembrance Killed In Action Cards for two German Soldiers, brothers in WW1,one an officer and the other an Infantry Soldier. In Germany these are known as Sterbebilder Cards. The first card shows Josef Fenzl of the 20th Infantry Regiment ,1st Company who was killed in action near Arras,France on June 21,1915.He was 21 years old.Nice black and white photo of him in his German Army WW1 uniform showing him in full marching order with his Pickelhaube Helmet, rifle with attached bayonet, scabbard for bayonet, belt buckle, ammunition pack, combat boots etc.He is posed in a photographic studio with a painted backround behind him.The other illustrations on the remembrance card are of a religious and patriotic nature.
Actual size of the Sterbebilder when unfolded is approximately 4 by 5 1/2 inches.
The second death and remembrance card is for a German WW1 Officer Franz Fenzl, the brother of Josef Fenzl. He was an officer in the 16th Infantry Regiment,10th Company and was killed in action on September 25,1914 in France. He was 25 years old.
His black and white photograph shows him proudly posing in his dress uniform with what appears to be a bayonet or ceremonial type sword,he is holding his white dress gloves in one hand and smoking a cigarette in the other hand. There is table on which his hand is on and the typical painted backdrop behind him in the photographers studio. The other illustration is of a religious nature.
These German WW1 death or remembrance and killed in action cards were distributed as a prayer card at the soldiers funeral.A major difference between the German WW1 and WW11 death cards is that only the WW1 death cards had the actual soldiers regiment and company information on them as by WW11 this information was not printed on the cards for security reasons.
Actual size of the Sterbebilder when unfolded is approximately 4 1/2 by 5 inches.
Condition of both cards is very good, both are complete and flat. Some smudging and dustiness to the cards, slight fading, light wear to card edges and corners. The photos of the two brothers are clear and details can be made out. Some browning to cards. Both are printed on paper not card stock as was the practice for these death and remembrance cards. Both are in quite collectible condition.
An unusual feature of these two death cards is that they are for two German soldiers who were brothers and both were killed in action in the early years of WW1.I found them both together in a small Upper Peninsula of Michigan shop several years ago.
These two original German WW1 death and remembrance,Killed in Action Cards for these two brothers would make a fine addition to your original German Army in WW1 historical memorabilia collection.A great addition to your WW1 militaria collection.
