This picture framing mat or matting  is a matboard (heavy paper-based pH neutral material with printed decorative facing paper  ) to be used on a photo or picture to enhance and give a finished look to a photograph or artwork when place into a frame. It is designed to be placed in a frame (it is NOT the frame and does not stand alone.)   It also serves as added protection separating the art or photo from the glass.  This size mat is a standard size which will fit into frames purchased from Walmart, Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Target etc.  Hope this answers your question.
